In fulfilment of our primary objective of defending the liberty of the citizens, most of whom in most cases are helpless and hapless, the Practice either directly or in most cases through its NGO – The Prisoners Rights Advocacy Initiative (PRAI) undertake the defence of Awaiting Trial prisoners, including under-aged children, many of whom have been remanded in prison custody of between one and ten years without their trials being completed or commenced at all. On the average, about 10 cases are either voluntarily taken over or referred to PRAI every month.
The cost of defending these prisoners is largely borne by the Practice. The Chairman and members of the Board of PRAI have also been making significant contribution for the sunning of the NGO to facilitate its work.
In addition to the legal defence of the prisoners in court, PRAI has also recently been engaged in the rehabilitation process of the prisoners to prepare them for life after prison. Our practice also covers other areas of public interest law.
